Animalia: From Horses, to Bats, to Bears and Beyond.
Curated by Terri Sarris and C. Jacqueline Wood
“The animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they have moved finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not breth-ren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.” - Henry Beston, quoted in “The Sun” - August 2016
Animals have inspired filmmakers since film’s earliest history. A horse is the most iconic image of Edward Muybridge’s proto-cinematic serial photography of the 1870’s and a mouse – Mickey - one of the most beloved and recognizable animated animals of all time.
These seven short experimental and animated films focus on animals – from horses, to bats, to bears, and beyond – and our relationships to them.
