Tampopo (1985) Directed by Juzo Itami

Newly Remastered!

The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges—our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture both high and low, the sweet, sexy, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made. – Criterion Collection

The Prison in Twelve Landscapes is a film about the prison in which we never see a penitentiary. More people are imprisoned in the United States at this moment than in any other time or place in history, yet the prison itself has never felt further away or more out of sight. The film unfolds as a cinematic journey through a series of landscapes across the USA where prisons do work and affect lives: from a California mountainside where female prisoners fight raging wildfires, to a Bronx warehouse full of goods destined for the state correctional system.

Proceeded by FOR THEY KNOW NOT which was produced as part of the filmmaking collaborative Pens to Pictures, in which five films were written by women in the Dayton Correctional Institution and directed outside the prison with the help of local artists. For They Know Not was shot in the Cincinnati area in 2016

Young People’s Specials: The Trouble With Mother (1979)

Rare Cincinnati-lensed drama in 16mm

Filmed in Cincinnati with a mostly local cast and crew, The Trouble with Mother was an episode of the long-running series Young People’s Specials, an educational and family-friendly Multimedia Inc. production (then owners of WLWT). Though not as well known as the genre-defining ABC Afterschool Special, in their scrappy style Young People’s Specials competed by employing well-travelled character actors (John Carradine, Molly Picon) and creatively using location shooting to stage their diverse array of dramas (in the episode DzNightmare: The Immigration of Joachim and Racheldz, Lower Price Hill stood in for Nazi-occupied Warsaw).

In The Trouble with Mother the eccentric Academy Award-winning actress Sandy Dennis, fresh off a stint in a local dinner theater production of Two For the Seesaw, portrays a housewife who has to come to terms with her young daughter’s feminist awakening and her compromised ambitions. Extremely difficult to see since its original broadcast on March 23, 1979, this simple understated drama will be shown via a rare 16mm print.

Curator Bio: Adam Williams is a cinéaste and film collector who lives with his cat Sandy in Walnut Hills.

A handful of Aymara elders live in its surroundings. And scattered among them in this beautiful but taxing region are a handful of hot springs and animals. In the background, machines extract and transport borax from an important deposit. Lightning Over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy (1988), color - 80 min.

Director Tony Buba in attendance.

Tony's first feature film was Lightning Over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy, which in turn established him as an innovator of the "exploded documentary."

Lightning won numerous awards, including "Best Film" at the Birmingham International Film Festival in England and a nomination as "Best First Feature Film" by the Independent Spirit Awards.

Like Buba’s earlier short films, Lightning chronicles the decline of Braddock, Pennsylvania, a hard-luck town which once flourished as “Pittsburgh’s shopping center.”

It concerns a director (Tony Buba, playing himself) trying, without much success, to make a movie with a crazy street hustler named Sal, who considers himself responsible for Buba’s (modest) success. Like Errol Morris, Buba has a fascination with the idiosyncratic details of daily life, and uses his formidable sense of humor to document the decay of industrial America.

“A triumph of pragmatic populism with a cast of union organizers, street hustlers, and Buba himself, [it] should be required viewing at every Sundance seminar; this ‘rustbowl fantasy’ is one of the few regional movies to successfully and unsentimentally peel off the national smile button.” –J. Hoberman, VILLAGE VOICE

Washing Walls with Mrs. G. (1980) - b&w, 6 min.

“Every year I washed walls for my grandmother. When my grandmother was 87, I made this video while washing her walls. The camera person was Nick Mastandrea, who has gone on to be one of the top A.D. in Hollywood. Nick never shot anything before this and he said what do I do. I told him don't pan, tilt or zoom, just keep my grandmother in the frame.”

TONY BUBA has been producing documentaries since 1972 in both long and short formats. Since getting his M.F.A from Ohio University in 1976, Tony has worked on several feature films, including George Romero’s Martin and Dawn of the Dead. In addition to his behind-the-scenes roles, Tony has appeared onscreen as well. In Dawn of the Dead, he is a featured motorcycle raider who gets his arm torn off at a blood pressure machine.

His films have been screened at Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, and other major international film festivals. He has had one-person exhibitions at more than 100 universities and museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Carnegie Museum of Art.

Tony and Braddock Films have also been featured on NPR. His awards include fellowships from the NEA, AFI, and the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations, as well as grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.

"In “Sankofa,” a contemporary African-American woman travels back in time and experiences slavery. Haile Gerima’s poetic and precisely detailed film takes its audience into its heroine’s life and mind as her moral sense is challenged and changed. No viewer can avoid the discomforting questions the film so eloquently raises." - The New York Times

Animalia: From Horses, to Bats, to Bears and Beyond.

Curated by Terri Sarris and C. Jacqueline Wood

“The animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they have moved finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not breth-ren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.” - Henry Beston, quoted in “The Sun” - August 2016

Animals have inspired filmmakers since film’s earliest history. A horse is the most iconic image of Edward Muybridge’s proto-cinematic serial photography of the 1870’s and a mouse – Mickey - one of the most beloved and recognizable animated animals of all time.

These seven short experimental and animated films focus on animals – from horses, to bats, to bears, and beyond – and our relationships to them.

Marussia (2013, France/Russia). 82 minutes.

Presented by Michael Gott, UC Center for Film and Media Studies

Preceded by selected shorts.

Marussia recounts the story of a Russian woman and her young daughter, who are forced to navigate the streets of Paris after being thrown out of their temporary accommodation. While it offers insight into the life of a female migrant in the French capital, Marussia is known most for the way it avoids the common expectations of “migrant cinema.” Pervolovici employs magical realism to depict these contemporary migrants in a compelling fashion. Elements of fantasy combined with the protagonists’ stubborn and unrestrained optimism recall Louis Malle’s whimsical 1960 classic Zazie dans le metro. At the same time Marussia has been described by the director as an urban road movie and it offers a fascinating look at the streets of Paris where the story takes place and was filmed.

Eva Pervolovici is a talented young filmmaker from Romania who is based in Paris. Marussia is an overlooked gem that was not distributed in the US despite excellent reviews during a theatrical run in Paris and on the worldwide film festival circuit.

About the series:
The Center for Film and Meda Studies at UC promotes the interdisciplinary study of film and other screen media and sponsors a wide range of screenings and events with filmmakers and film scholars on and off campus. Our 2017-2018 series, UC Film Fest, brings recent films from global film festivals to the Mini. Beginning in Fall, the program will include series of compelling short and feature-length films organized around important issues such as migration and urban policy. Films are presented by UC faculty and guests and students participate in the planning and programming process through internships for course credit.

Join us for The Mini’s 100th screening, when local filmmaker Joseph Maiocco presents Little Dreamer, a short film about one little girl's imagination that comes to life. Set in her tranquil backyard, the audience is immediately introduced to a myriad of characters ranging from a tuxedo wearing frog, to a pair of drunken gnomes. By blending the worlds of 2D animation and live action cinematography, this film captures the innocence of youth, imagination, and the idea of community. Nearly three years in the making, Little Dreamer utilizes some good ole’ fashioned camera tricks in order to bend the rules, but not necessarily break them. Only through experimentation and a disciplined approach to process was Director Joseph Maiocco able create this cinematic world.
