"On April 4, 2017, over 180 art house movie theatres across the country in 165 cities and in 43 states, plus five locations in Canada, one in England, and one in Swedenftower will be participating collectively in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the 80's movie 1984 starring John Hurt, who sadly died last month. This date was chosen because it's the day George Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. These theaters owners also strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and see any attempt to scuttle that program as an attack on free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard." - unitedstateofcinema.com

FREEEEEE

Curated by David Siders a.k.a. Little Bastard and Steve Kemple, featuring vids w Culture Queer and Ass Ponys.

What would life be without music? Our life experience and memories are infiltrated by song; we remember facets of our lives when we hear a favorite refrain. Add visuals, and music explodes into our existence, helping us elevate our experiences, escape from problems, and distract from hardships. Music can make a parody of life, a fantasy of life, and a protest of the political life. This series of short films, along with short sound/noise interludes created by DJ Steve Kemple, explores the range of ecstasy, exhilaration, fantasy and sadness of music filling the days of our lives. Music is temporal and also integral in long term memory.

Ten (2002) Directed By: Abbas Kiarostami

Celebrated Iranian writer-director Abbas Kiarostami (TASTE OF CHERRY, CLOSE-UP) once again casts his masterful cinematic gaze upon the modern sociopolitical landscape of his homeland, this time as seen through the eyes of one woman as she drives through the streets of Tehran over a period of several days. Her journey is comprised of ten conversations with various female passengers, including her sister, a hitchhiking prostitute and a jilted bride, as well as her imperious young son. As Kiarostami's 'dashboard cam' eavesdrops on these lively, heart-wrenching road trips, a complex portrait of contemporary Iran comes sharply into focus. Calling it a 'work of inspired simplicity,' A.O. Scott in The New York Times wrote that Kiarostami, "in addition to being perhaps the most internationally admired Iranian filmmaker of the past decade, is also among the world masters of automotive cinema...He understands the automobile as a place of reflection, observation and, above all, talk."

Each of the four films collected in this program are observations on distinct areas in the world: the stunning winged inhabitants of an island off the coast of Wales, the interplay between cowboy and horse in the isolation of the Canadian Rockies, heavenly cloud formations in the Alps, and the Gulf of Guinea’s sacred role to a village in Ghana. Made in different eras (spanning 1926 to 1956) by filmmakers of different nationalities (British, Canadian, French, and German), these movies share a reverence and awe for nature. Due to their short length and non-commercial genre, they are examples of movies that are rarely given an audience. In presenting them as a group, these brief glimpses of places seldom seen take on a transportive quality; a travelogue away from the here and now.
