Adaptation, presented in collaboration with the Mercantile Library, considers books and the movies they inspire. Prepare to get scared as we dive into Koji Suzuki's 1991 novel The Ring. This terrifying tome, originally titled Ringu, follows reporter Kazuyuki Asakawa on his quest to uncover the mystery behind four gruesome deaths in Tokyo — including that of his niece. The investigation leads him to an unmarked videotape with disturbing footage that could seal his own fate.
The 1998 Japanese film adaptation of the same name, directed by Hideo Nakata, achieved critical and commercial success, paving the way for several remakes and stylistic copycats. Join us to discuss these two influential works of modern horror and learn about the surprising backstory that inspired the novel.
Discussions facilitated by Mini volunteers Lillian Currens and Michael Sweeny.
