A British nail-biter about a spelunking trip gone way off the rails, The Descent (2005, Neil Marshall) follows an all-female ensemble as they do battle with darkness, claustrophobia, and maybe a force even worse deep within the bowels of an Appalachian cave. With its deft interplay of light and shadow and tone of survivalist realism, The Descent synthesizes the best of the horror canon (Alien, Deliverance) with more contemporary elements: no-holds-barred gore and tough, gutsy female characters.
