The Anniversary Show

The Third Man (1949) Directed by Carol Reed

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

“Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime—and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception, and murder. Thanks to brilliant performances by Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles; Anton Karas's evocative zither score; Graham Greene’s razor-sharp dialogue; and Robert Krasker’s dramatic use of light and shadow, The Third Man, directed by the inimitable Carol Reed, only grows in stature as the years pass.” - Criterion (104 min)

By Les Blank - Two Films

Presented by Peter Van Hyning

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

An uncompromisingly independent filmmaker, Les Blank made documentaries for nearly fifty years, elegantly disappearing with his camera into cultural spots rarely seen on-screen—mostly on the peripheries of the United States, but also occasionally abroad. Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers (1980) is more than just a nonfiction lark. Blank’s highly personal film  is an ode to the “stinking rose,” a loving tribute both to a food that unites the most disparate of cuisines and to the East Bay, California, community that appears on-screen. In Gap-Toothed Women (1987), Blank breezily questions our commonly accepted standards of beauty with this paean to women with extra-wide dental spaces. (81 min)

Allegro Non Troppo (1976) Bruno Bozzetto

Presented by Colleen Houston

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto grew up loving Disney cartoons to such an extent that even his 1977 feature-length parody of Fantasia, Allegro Non Troppo, is more affectionate than savage. Bozzetto's economy-sized Fantasia strings together colorful studies of loneliness, loss, and social absurdity with a coarse, doodling line that wouldn't be out of place in Mad magazine. The film is firmly of its decade, favoring trippy spectacle over storytelling, but Bozzetto's stream-of-consciousness vignettes are wittier and more smartly conceived than most '70s light-shows. Pati reflects on life in a rural Indian village; Sweet Life explores the artist's relationship with his own mother through her mental illness; The Lost Head & The Bird is a phantasmagoric plunge into contemporary Indian society's chaotic landscape of violence, image, fact and fiction. Robert Beatty: Video Works 2010-2019

Co-Presented with No Response

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

Robert Beatty is an artist and musician based in Lexington, Kentucky. His multi-disciplinary work in the fields of drawing, digital art, sculpture, video, graphic design, and sound use outmoded technology and emulation of obsolete techniques to yield organic and otherworldly results. Beatty emerged from the mid 2000's American noise music underground to become one of the most sought-after figures in contemporary album art. In addition to his music and graphic art, Beatty has quietly created dozens of moving-image works: music videos for compositions by himself and others, elements of his art installations, videos made collaboratively as part of the Resonant Hole collective he co-founded, and stand-alone pieces. Pickpocket (1959) Directed by Robert Bresson

Presented by Walter E. Langsam

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

This incomparable story of crime and redemption from the French master Robert Bresson follows Michel, a young pickpocket who spends his days working the streets, subway cars, and train stations of Paris. As his compulsive pursuit of the thrill of stealing grows, however, so does his fear that his luck is about to run out. A cornerstone of the career of this most economical and profoundly spiritual of filmmakers, Pickpocket is an elegantly crafted, tautly choreographed study of humanity in all its mischief and grace, the work of a director at the height of his powers. - Criterion (76 min)

Walter E. Langsam is a retired architectural historian and historic-preservation consultant, who specialized in the historic architecture and architects of the Cincinnati area. He taught for 30 years at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) and also at OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. He is the author of Great Houses of the Queen City, with photographs by Alice Weston, and has contributed to various other books and videos on local architecture, as well as giving numerous lectures and tours. He has long considered film the major distinctive art form of the 20th century, and Robert Bresson the most significant director, from both a cinematic and a spiritual standpoint.

History in the First Person: The Video Diaries of Nelson Sullivan

Presented by Michael Sweeny

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

Called the father of vlogging, Nelson Sullivan was a fixture of New York City’s gay scene during the 1980s. Using then cutting edge VHS and Hi8 technology to obsessively document every aspect of his life -- the parties, subway rides, drag shows and visits to friends’ apartments -- Sullivan crafted, week by week, incident by incident, a video diary of astounding breadth and intimacy. The hundreds of hours of footage he logged provide an indelible snapshot of the city’s LGBTQ+ community at a moment of political and artistic ferment and devastating collective tragedy. Many who appear, including John Sex and Keith Haring, died during the AIDS epidemic while others, such as RuPaul, Lady Bunny and Michael Alig, would go on to achieve fame and infamy. (90 min)

Presented by Ann Driscoll

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

A British nail-biter about a spelunking trip gone way off the rails, The Descent (2005, Neil Marshall) follows an all-female ensemble as they do battle with darkness, claustrophobia, and maybe a force even worse deep within the bowels of an Appalachian cave. With its deft interplay of light and shadow and tone of survivalist realism, The Descent synthesizes the best of the horror canon (Alien, Deliverance) with more contemporary elements: no-holds-barred gore and tough, gutsy female characters. Adaptation, presented in collaboration with the Mercantile Library, considers books and the movies they inspire. Prepare to get scared as we dive into Koji Suzuki's 1991 novel The Ring. This terrifying tome, originally titled Ringu, follows reporter Kazuyuki Asakawa on his quest to uncover the mystery behind four gruesome deaths in Tokyo — including that of his niece. The investigation leads him to an unmarked videotape with disturbing footage that could seal his own fate.

The 1998 Japanese film adaptation of the same name, directed by Hideo Nakata, achieved critical and commercial success, paving the way for several remakes and stylistic copycats. Join us to discuss these two influential works of modern horror and learn about the surprising backstory that inspired the novel.

Vincent Price Double Feature: House on Haunted Hill (1959) Directed by William Castle / The Tingler (1959) Directed by William Castle

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mini - 1329 Main St.

FREE. PLEASE RSVP. LIMITED SEATING. - https://vincentprice60th.eventbrite.com

In William Castle’s House on Haunted Hill, rich oddball Frederick Loren (Vincent Price) has a proposal for five guests at a possibly haunted mansion: Show up, survive a night filled with scares and receive $10,000 each. The guest of honor is Loren's estranged wife, Annabelle (Carol Ohmart), who, with her secret lover, Dr. Trent (Alan Marshal), has concocted her own scheme to scare Loren's associate, Nora Manning (Carolyn Craig), into shooting the potentially crazy millionaire. But more spooks and shocks throw a wrench into the plan. (75 min)

In The Tingler, Dr. Warren Chapin (Vincent Price) has made a surprising discovery -- the spine-chilling sensation that people get when scared is due to a parasite that he dubs the "tingler." Chapin concludes that in extreme circumstances, prolonged fear can cause the creature to damage a person's spine and even cause death if the victim can't scream, a theory that Oliver Higgins (Philip Coolidge) uses to deadly effect on his wife (Judith Evelyn). Soon the tingler that killed the woman is on the loose. (82 min)

MEGALODEMOCRAT : The Public Art of Rafael Lozano‑Hemmer (2018) Directed by Benjamin Duffield

Presented by Annie Dell’Aria

Doors 7:00 PM / Start 7:30 PM @ The Mercantile Library - 414 Walnut St. #1100, Cincinnati, OH 45202

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is one of the most acclaimed artists working today, but his pieces wouldn’t exist without public participation. MEGALODEMOCRAT explores Rafael’s quest to stage a democratic takeover of urban space. Shot over 10 years in 30 cities around the world, the film provides intimate access to his large-scale interactive creations in locations such as Trafalgar Square in London, the Vancouver Olympics and New York’s Park Avenue Tunnel, culminating in a piece that crosses the US-Mexico border. In our increasingly isolated lives, MEGALODEMOCRAT serves as an antidote to alienation: Rafael’s work is a rallying point for a screened-in urban population, longing to connect. His art doesn’t discriminate, and all who participate are given a voice. With that voice comes a sense of hope. This film will be introduced by art historian Annie Dell'Aria and include a post-screening discussion of the role of new media in contemporary public art. (94 min)
